I would actually be excited to see how Zash and Schiller do as the SSDMs against anyone the canadians have to throw at them...

Both are formidable, and I've seen them smother their opponents and stay real close on the hands with lots of elbow lifts...both defiantely needed when you're playing a bunch of guys with the stickwork that the canadians have.

That cannot be the final roster, it has more than 23 people on it.

from Dakota Dan a week and a half ago:
Team Canada Roster for 2010 Lacrosse Championships
Postby DakotaDan on Fri Oct 23, 2009 8:47 pm
Toronto, Ontario (Oct. 22, 2009) Two of the 30 players recently selected to play for Team Canada in next year's World Lacrosse Championships [see full roster at the bottom] have direct connections to the Stony Brook men's lacrosse team. Junior Jordan McBride (New Westminster, B.C.) and former standout Rhys Duch '08 have both been named to the 30-man roster that will compete for Team Canada in next year's world championships that will be held in Manchester, England in July.

later on in the press release:
On Wednesday, Team Canada announced that Kirk was one of 30 players selected from an original pool of 56 still in consideration for one of 23 roster spots. According to the official press release, "...general manager Johnny Mouradian and head coach David Huntley and his staff will take their time before arriving at the 23-man roster that will represent Canada at the world field lacrosse championship...."

they evidently subscribe some meaning to the "30-man roster". or whoever wrote or dictated the release chose confusing lingo. not too long ago, the US brought an extra guy or 2 to the games that weren't allowed to suit up & they typically rotated them if there was no inj reserv candidate. sounds like they'll have 23 canucks named sometime between now and manchester.

International rules say you must submit a roster of no more than 23 players immediately before the opening of the tournament (usually 24 hours before the first games are to be played). Once the roster is set, you get no additions. If someone gets hurt and cannot play, you play with one less player on the roster. In 2003 U19s, we carried two goalies and one of them (Bud Petit) severely sprained an ankle in the second game against Iroquois and was done for the rest of the tournament. We played one goalie ( Harry Alford) the rest of the way and had he been hurt we would have been forced to play a non-goalie in the cage. It was a bit apprehensive as Harry liked to roam out of the net a lot as was a target. Middie Nick Williams practiced as a goalie (having never played the position ever) just in case Harry went down.

The roster can be changed any time ( additions and subtractions) any time up to that deadline. You can name alternates but once you submit your final roster of 23 no further changes are allowed.

what i expected nowadays, as i haven't heard or read of extras the last few worlds. up until the late 90s, 26 were carried & several didn't suit. with a hard number, 25 seems to make more sense given the number of games in a small window, but... so it goes.

nepotism has been a disappointing lingering doubt of the selection process for just about every (at least senior) team created (that 1967 team was shameless), sans one. i'm actually surprised, if anything, that more duke players didn't make the 23 after 6 were kept on the 40. the structural makeup of the team isn't really much different than previous ones, maybe one more that will be tabbed as a ssm & a pure f/o guy this time. where the favorites question comes in here is not surprisingly at a qualitative vs. quantitative position, ssm, where 2 blue devils presumably will line up. & fullerton nabs a spot in goal. is it fair to question players' selections (espec in this instance when moi did not witness any tryouts)? well, over just about every squad selected, the final selections are tilted in favor of coaches' connections. so there's good circumstantial evidence that it helps you... for both getting a tryout & your chances of making the team, qualified or not. i'm sure they'll trade off a little blog banter. the only exception was.... tierney's 1998 team. he clearly could have leveraged his championships and position for more spots, and did not. (maybe a deal with the devil for 2002?... prob not). so good on him. look for a dukie to fill in if an attackman or defenseman needs to be replaced.

i understand how this can be part of travel club team selection in h.s., or post season awards at any level. you're putting in time, or you're going to back your guys. my problem with our world team selection is that this is our country's team. a lot of guys have the passion to want to represent their country, & it's a huge feather, the top of the game. everyone should have to be better on the field, no ties go to the alum. should not be influenced in any way like a job interview... your reputation, who you know, where you played. it just shouldn't. but it seems it will be for the foreseeable future.

What's Huntley's connection with Canda?
is it a parent or grandparent?

Or did I miss the memo that Calvert Hall relocated to Ontario?

Thatsmell you REALLY missed the memo. Dave Huntley, Kevin's Dad, is Team Canada's Head Coach!!! He's been an assistant coach for Team Canada since 1998 maybe?

Quint K did his Team USA video for IL today. His notable exclusions to Team USA were Kevin Leveille, Joe Walters, and Lee Zink, who were all notable exclusions listed by posters on this board.

Huntley (son) would have Canadian citizenship having been born abroad as a child of a Canadian parent. Which begs the question - would he have made this team if his father were not the coach?

Incidentally, Huntley was on Canada's U19 team in 2003.

K. Huntley's had a considerable amount of field lax success at all levels. It's pretty crowded on the team Canada attack. Maybe he sees most of his time on man up.

That can't be denied. However, there's some pretty good talent that has been left off the remaining 30 man list, including Jeff Zywicki who I recall led the tournament in goals in 2006 and pretty much owned the U.S. defense. Now Zywicki's a righty and Huntley's a lefty so that may have played into it, but I am puzzled by the move of Zack Greer, another lefty attackman with some past success, to midfield.

WOW !!!! A lot of questions about these selections. Looks like they went with big physical middies (except for Zash and Striebel ) No Walters, Harrison, or Berger tells me they think they have enough scoring with Dixon and Rabil. Attack would be tough to cut no matter who. Every one of the guys out there could have made it. I am suprised that both Leveilles did not make it D ?? No Polanco ? No Zink ? Looks like they went with athleticism and versatility over muscle. Martin, Driscoll and Sweeney can run with anybody. Nads can play short stick, long pole and close. Goalie, Fullerton is a suprise. Smith at face off. He has good numbers vs Snyder, Peyser is a good backup ! All in all you could not go wrong with any one of the final 41. It was just a matter of what you were looking for. Now they have to gel !!

The Fullerton pick is a shock to this humble observer ! Having watched several of the tryouts and all the games , 2 weeks ago at NAVY , this pick appears political at best ! No doubt that Fullerton was a good player at Army and as made some appearances for Denver of the MLL but not taking Jarboe is an insult at many levels. Coach Alberici won a huge PR bonanza for his program at Jarboe's expense. Yes , I'm biased, but I'm not blind. Mickey won a couple of Kelly awards , 1st Team AA , MLL awards for the Riptide for several years in a row and the list goes on. Mickey also completely out played Fullerton at the tryouts and the games we all witnessed at Navy. I just remain very disappointed that Pressler let this happen. Simple proof that loyalties to old coaching pals and former programs was a stronger driver than picking the best goalie to back up Doc .

Very disillusioned with this news. Casts a cloud on the integrity of the whole selection process.

I found the "original" invite list very interesting.

I thought not inviting Schwartzman to try out was atrocious.

That being said the team is outstanding and someone apparently inserted some common sense in a couple of places.

Walters and Jarboe are the two that stick out to me as questionmarks on why they are not on the team.

Quint also did note that Adam Fullerton has never been truly tested in "big games" and said Jarboe had been. Again, his commentary concurs with the posters on this thread.

You can't tell me that this team will be better with Crotty instead of Danowski. Think about it.
Bad choice on Presslers part. Don't know what he is thinking.

Even though this comment is really about the Canadian team I'm gonna post it here as a response to Lax Genius.

It is absolutely ludicrous that Jeff Zywicki did not make the Canadian National team. I would say that he and Brendan Mundorf have been the best pure goal scorers in professional outdoor and indoor lacrosse over the last 3 years. He certainly was unstoppable in the last world games. I love Gary Gait, but anyone who actually saw the Final knows that most of Zywicki's 5 goals came earlier in the game and really put Canada in the driver's seat to win. Most of Gait's goals in the 4th quarter of that game were really insurance goals on a sealed win.
