Jacksonville Dolphins 2009-10

New postby ChangesInLaxitude on Wed Jun 17, 2009 5:54 pm

Coach Kerwick must be getting pretty excited down in the Sunshine State as, in just a couple of short months, the JU Dolphins field their inaugural D1 lax team for fallball . The New York high schools just completed their seasons and awards are out ... JU gets an All-American middie by the name of John Linnan from Penn Yan, NY out of Section 5. Linnan joins Marshall Johnson (Canandaigua/Fairfield), Kyle VanThof (Penfield/Penn Stae), and Drew Coholan (Irondequoit/Maryland) as All-American midfielders out of Section 5. Have seen Linnan play, not flashy but quick, sees the field well, and picks up alot of ground balls, can shoot and is a great assistman too. These four All-Americans were part of the Rochester Adidas team that won the Adidas Classic last summer, although Coholan chose not to play due to prior commitments. They also played in the Brogden Cup against Canada this past December in Orlando.

I wouldn't be surprised if Jeremy Tissenbaum is a standout performer for the team next year. He looked good in limited pt with Hobart in 2008.

Agreed. I believe he played club at JU this spring and was definately a standout. Also, Chip Young, a transfer from Maryland, should help solidify the corp ... http://www.judolphins.com/mlacrosse/news/24/13030/

As with any startup program, depth will be their achilles heel.

I realize that that comparing Tierney to Kerwick doesn't make any sense, but while everyone is talking about how Tierney is going to change the face of lacrosse out west, I think Kerwick can and will make huge strides in the southeast. He has a lot of good connections, so he'll be able to field a pretty good schedule and there's no shortage of pure athletes in the state of Florida. It'll take a few years since its being built from scratch, but he could end up doing something very special down there.

I just hope he has fond memories of Hobart if that day comes.

Any bad memories that Matt has of Hobart will be erased the day that the BoT comes to its senses and sacks Hanna!

Kerwick, O'hara, Roach, Greer will all feel vindicated when Hanna is shown the door. Someone must be looking out for him.

I actually think Kerwick could do better than Tierney. Coach Tierney is a bigger name, obviously, but I think Kerwick is hungrier after getting dumped by Hobart. Tierney appears to be "cashing out" and setting the stage for his son to tak over in Denver. Denver is expecting a lot in a hurry by dumping Coach Munro and putting out big money for Coach Tierney. At Jacksonville, the expectations won't be as high, and you can take time building a program.

In addition, recruiting NY/NJ kids to a Florida coast community that is a sizeable city people have heard of isn't going to be that difficult, particularly if a few NY schools are on the schedule. A lot of Florida is basically NY south anyway. Compared to Presbyterian and Mercer, which are in smaller inland Southern communities, Jacksonville is a lot easier sell for the "Yankees" looking for nice weather.

Colorado is nice country, but I still think it is a tougher sell to Easterners. Despite the growth of the sport, I don't think you can be a power without at least some top-tier Eastern players.

Could be a good catch for the Dolphins. Late bloomer who looks to have found some very good speed and stamina this summer.
