With the Doc Schneider era officially over, the ECAC era officially over, the LONG standing rivalry against Cuse over, the upcoming season of Gorilla Lacrosse is going to look quite different..
There has been talk about the two Smiths coming to campus this year (Longmeadow, Medfield MA), any other word on the new recruits?

Interesting to see the Georgetown game at UConn, I assume the game will be played at Rentschler Field?

Re: UMass 2010
Rentschler Field is located in East Hartford about 45 minutes from the Main UConn campus at Storrs. It is owned by the State of Connecticut and is managed independently of the university. It seats 40,000. This event is not listed at the Rentschler web site although it may be too early to see it booked there.
Morrone Field with a natural grass surface in Storrs seats 9,000 and is the main venue for men's and women's soccer as well as women's lacrosse. It might also be in the mix and probably is more suited to the crowd expected for this event.

The BIG question is who is going to be in the goal next year. Umass has a tradition of having great goalies, anybody got the inside scoop.

Re: UMass 2010
tim mccormack (who chose to red shirted in 2009), mael walkowiak (who was doc's back up in 2009) and, according to the laxpower recruiting database, steve mahle (incoming freshman from west genessee) are the potentials. mael never got much of a chance last year, only playing late in blow outs without the starting defense in front of him. he is very quick out of the net and seems to be a decent stopper. not sure of his leadership skills (which is an underrated, or under-noted area of doc's strength). tim is a larger presence in goal at 6'1"/200lbs and i've been told he is more athletic than doc. i know nothing about steve mahle.high2low wrote:The BIG question is who is going to be in the goal next year. doc is a hard act to follow, who ever wins the job.

Interesting concept...Maybe Yale could play a doubleheader with that game at Rentschler? It is an idea. If it is a standalone game at UConn then it will be even more intriguing since UConn doesn't have D-1 lax.

maybe it's an attempt to encourage uconn to add men's lax? natural geographic rival (umass) and big east rival (georgetown) playing on their campus.Zlax45 wrote:Interesting concept...Maybe Yale could play a doubleheader with that game at Rentschler? Re: UMass 2010
Interesting to see a kid from Lassiter. I just moved to Atlanta and know they scooped up a kid from Pope last year who was a defector from Hobart amid the DII turmoil. Anyone know what the relationship between UMass and the Atlanta area is? Is it the talent today (obviously there are a few exceptional kids, but it's not like Soto saw the field last year), or building a pipeline in anticipation of future growth down here?

big trip for umass this year going out to OHIO STATE looking forward to see that one! could be tough for the minutemen tho if they have to take the bus! In the past they leave 2 days before, its cheaper than flying!I guess it is one way to save money for the program.

Re: UMass 2010
Very interesting about Izzo from Walpole HS verbally comitting to UMASS.
NO doubt that he is a TREMENDOUS athlete an utterly fantastic football player and a very good lacrosse player.
My guess here is that Umass is feeling that he is only going to get better in lax as his college career continues and because he is so talented athletically there is a lot to work with - a tremendous potential upside to him as a lax player.
I think they are going to be right

You guys are getting a STANDOUT LSM from Episcopal Academy in Philly for the 2011 season in Bryson Craft. Strong, big, fast, physical, great stick skills and just loves to play the game. Great kid too. Enjoy.

Would have liked to see them add Boucher (Nassau CC - 1st team AA), little bull of a lefty attackman who can put the ball in the cage (shooting pct. something like 65 Pct.). Would have been a great fit!

Re: UMass 2010
The UMass Athletics website has a fall roster listed, and there are a few notable omissions/departures. First off, goalie Tim McCormack isn't listed. Does that make West Gennesse recruit Steve Mahle the early favorite between the pipes? Also Zach Rodgers name doesn't appear, nor does Peter McNichols. Both received considerable amounts of playing time at attack as freshmen the year of the brawl suspensions, but McNichols was ineligible last year, and Rodgers was either injured or in the Coach's doghouse. This would seem to open the door for highly regarded recruits Will Manny and Kyle Smith to grab playing time.
Tim Balise's name appears on the roster, but I'm pretty sure he has used up his eligibility.
It seems to me that the strength of the 2010 Lax Team will be defense with Godoi/Anderson/Tripucka and defensive midfield with Zorkers, Rahn and Jeffrey. The questions have to be who will play goal, and will the team score enough goals.
