Loyola 2013
Loyola 2013
Well, I'm new here, but if some teams started their 2013 threads before the season was even over, I might as well start one for the defending NATIONAL CHAMPIONS LOYOLA GREYHOUNDS!!
As they mentioned on TV yesterday, we should probably be pre-season #1 next year. Obviously losing Lusby will hurt, along with a few others, but the majority of our starters will be back, including Clutchy McClutcherson GK Jack Runkel.
I'm hoping for a few more ESPN games next season, along with another Final Four run. But for now, I'm content just sitting back and enjoying the sweet taste of victory. Who woulda thought that the little Jesuit school on Charles Street could bring home a Division 1 National Championship in a sport people actually care about?

Re: Loyola 2013
Loyola should take the #1, as no other team is deserving. Does anyone know of next years schedule coming out? Would be interesting to see some more top tier teams on the schedule along with Hopkins, Denver, Duke. I know they have a bunch of solid recruits for next season, they need a 3rd close D to step Up, along with 1-2 solid midfielders. They're attack looks strong and should return #4 Sawyer, #15 Ward, and #18 Pontrello. Goaltending isn't an issue obviously. This team has the chance to be defending national champs and the ECAC looks to be great next year as well.

I think that it began with Jimmy Patsos and the basketball team . . . and that led right into lacrosse season," said Eric Lusby, the Severna Park kid who scored four goals for Loyola against Maryland Monday. "A lot more people were talking about Loyola than Johns Hopkins."

Well the squad returns a ton of athletes/great lacrosse players, we have playoff experience and have a phenomonal class. If coach Toomey can keep the boys focused, we will be very competitive against any and all in 2013.

It will be interesting to see who Toomey replaces Lusby with.
Schultz? Pontrello? Seemd Pontrello saw some time in 6v6 while Shultz was an EMO guy. Pontrello impreses me as more of a dynamic playmaker, but Schultz can find space and get those hands free pretty well.
Faceoff?

Is Ian Gordon still around? I did not see him on this year's roster but I know he had injuries in the past. Was a top FOGO coming into college.

From my knowledge, he's no longer at LU. I had heard one of the new Division I programs was looking at bringing him in, but I'm not sure where he was this past school year.

Re: Loyola 2013
Loyola loses:
A Lusby,
M Dalton, Byrnes,
LSM Moriarty
Ward was probably the most forgotten and underrated man in D1 lacrosse, but came through many times in the clutch, including in the final four and championship game. He was always solid and great at creating opportunties for others. The ongoing misconception that seemed to take off due to the media attention is that sawyer and lusby were amazingly well-rounded and created their own shots. When in reality it was Ward, Butts, Layne, and OSully that stired the drink and allowed Sawyer and Lusby to let em rip.
I liked Fanshaw and Pontrellos' ability to invert through midfield, but I think that was a luxury Loyola had due to the quality of the starting attack. It paid dividends against Duke, and I really expected to see that strategy and those lines a bit more as ther season progressed, especially against Hopkins.
Depeer on the roster, who could potentially step up at attack or midfield?
Anyway, it will be interesting to see how the Hounds patch those holes in 2013 and who will step up with the opportunity.

Looks like 3 canadians arrive next year, do you think this has anything to do with Denver's dominant Off based on there Canadian players? I think at least one of these kids will step up and take a starting attack position.

Don't be a hoser!
Loyola has always done a good job of digging up unknown talent from a variety of places.
In the 90s the roster had a number of kids from JUCO- Zach Thornton, Sean Heffernan
In the OOs (before the area REALLY exploded) there was the PA/OH influx- Sullivan, Horsey
And Loyola has always loved it's Canadians too. You forget, before there was Mark Matthews, there was Gavin Prout, eh!
And I'm sure Reid Acton has inspired a few Cannucks to look at Evergreen too.
I wonder if any kids from Onondaga are considering Loyola?!
Gotta go listen to some Alanis...

I think that it is due to Reid Acton coming on board. It opens the pipe line. Kids start kicking the tires, coaches get to know each other.

That is so sad.
I really do not like when our young are taken so soon.
I wish his family and friends best wishes on celebrating his life and condolences on his passing.
