Well since no one seems to want to talk about this years team and I am bored at work I figure I can give it shot.
Here is what we know... Last season the team had its first #1 ranking in the history of the school. The team played well through out the season and at times looked like they deserved to be called the top team in country. After avenging a disappointing loss to Salisbury at home the team looked poised to make an appearance in Boston. However, in the end they came up short in the semi finals against a tough Gettysburg team that flat out just wanted it more and played better.
In my mind there are two challenges facing Stevenson in 2010. 1) Replacing/Reloading the players who have since graduated 2) playing the season with a sense of urgency and not resting on their laurels from last years success
Attack - As everyone in the DIII community probably knows by now Stevenson returns arguably the best attack unit in the country. Ford, Dailey, and Kazimer all took All American honors with Dailey and Kazimer both receiving first team honors and Kazimer being name attack-man of the year. It is no secret that this veteran unit will bare most of the burden for the offense this year.
Defense - Perhaps one of the most underrated D units in the country last year, this unit kept Stevenson in games when the offense wasn't playing like their usual selves. The only loss at close was All American Mike Simon. Returning on defense is Hart, Gustavaro, Clark, Douglas, and of coarse Hebert in goal. With a few new transfers and few younger guys stepping up I don't see a shortage of quality poles taking the field in 2010. I would think the Hart and Douglas would be their two top guys and expect them along with Hebert to leading this defense. The biggest loss to the defense is without a doubt mid-fielders Chris Baldwin and Brett Yoder. These two both got snubbed with akalaids this year as they were probably two of the best D middies in the country. They also played a little offense on occasion too...
Midfield - This is definitely where the Mustangs were hit the hardest. Their 4 top middies (Becacqua, Furshman, Yoder, and Baldwin) all have graduated and the team must find players to fill in for these players quickly. The mustangs return a handful of quality mid-fielders such as Maguire, Couglar, lamey and Moffit. Moffit is the best prospect with speed and laser of a shot on the run. However, these players will need to learn how to become more of play makers than roll players which they served as in the past.
Overall look for the veteran Defense and Attack to carry this team early in the season while the midfield gets settled in.
I apologize for grammar, spelling, and not going into as much detail as I would have liked but I didn't have time to proof read thoroughly and they aren't paying me to write on laxpower...
