SAA 2018

D3 is just an insecure Huntingdon homer. 2014 was his most active year on the forum because Huntingdon beat an SAA team that year... BSC, I believe. Probably the weakest BSC team that program has ever fielded. D3 was on top of the world! He's been pretty much silent since then, because Huntingdon has struggled the last few years. But they've won a couple games this year, so watch out!

2018 is upon us ! SAA diehards whats good. so we back another year on the forums - if you need a refresher please navigate your way on over to the 2017 thread. we in dere like swim wear boi

few points of emphasis:
-Top finishers - rhodes, berry, sewanee (will get a better read from the YSR boys as season goes on)
-disruptor of the year - hendrix

-To be quite anne frank, it is clear that ol sewanee may be on a down year. obviously not the best way to evalute team performance by comparing scores, but S'western pushing OT on the YSR boys - come on. especially at "historic" harding whatever its called field! must be that dirty dirty smokey mountain water they drink up there making em forget to play baggataway
- berry looking strong after being edged out by CNU, who sneakily have become a nasty squad in the past 5 years. berry represented their nickname (vikings) well and raped and pillaged Southwestern's village in the first game. (sewanee look out). loss against Colorado COll isnt great but cant read into that one too too much. last big OOC test will be against Aurora but should win out rest of games until conference
- centre just seems to be straight disappointing. they have a sad sad OOC slate and losing to Huntingdon :o no bueno mis amigos. see how the rest of the season goes but right now looks like Hendrix is taking the W in that conference game so far (back to back years for you SAA historians)

BSC - well see how they fair; dont know much about the team this year, but again OOC results will give us a real look at how they stacking up come conference

Oglethorpe - well get there buddy! i mean sh*t, these dudes whip their weight around for the numbers they got and clear lack of attention they receive from the athletic department. keep battling stormy petrels! (espn ranked as one of the best nicknames around)

millsaps - gonna have the best season yet!!. MS lax has never looked so good!

and for the team that matters the most...
Z absolutely has developed a squad to be reckoned with. Between an experienced offensive unit and returning the primary defensive core (one of the top defensive units in the nation) minus graduation senior close d stud, stanky John Wank, there is no reason Rhodes cannot win out regular season and sweep the SAA playoffs. OOC schedule is real this year for the lynx, with a national lineup of teams (Widener, Muhlenburg, Denison etc.). lookin for ol Fen to take AA honors his senior year and all returning freshman to continue dominating conference awards. Been a long way from the 20-25 guys we had in 2013 to a whole army of 50 now in 2018. Z's building a dynasty down there and Memphis aint known for just fried chicken and Juicy j anymore but also top level D3 lax. as Z famously said during the 2015 campaign "Bring the Juice!"

let the banter begin

Wouldn’t say Huntingdon has struggled the last few years as they had a winning record last year and had the #2 upset in D3, according to laxpower, last year as well. They are 3-0 against the terrible SAA teams they’ve played so far, and they have Rhodes and BSC coming up soon. So those will be good games.

You guys love to claim Sewanee, Berry, BSC and now Rhodes but forget that Oglethorpe still hasn’t improved, Hendrix and Centre are declining and Milsaps doesn’t even have a team.

Hendrix and BSC games this Friday will help give context to the rest of the conference.

Hendrix plays Whittier

And

BSC plays Southwestern and then Whittier the following day

Sewanee has their annual test vs. Roanoke. The Nokes have look pretty strong this year, will be interesting to see how Sewanee can hold up.

Berry vs Va. Wesleyan, I think Berry will handle them pretty easily

Rhodes opens up their season vs. Augustana. We will get a look at how many of their 20 freshman get playing time.

Rhodes already 1-0 - Buddy. Looks like same old cast scoring goals for them........

BSC beats Whittier 10-7

Rhodes beat Augustana 20-4

Centre beats Hanover 9-3

Sewanee loses to Roanoke 23-5

BSC looks better this year than last year. Surprising with how much turnover they had from last year’s team to this one. Some young guys for BSC are stepping up on their offense while their Goalie, Matt Quil, stood on his head in the Whittier game (25 saves)

Rhodes crushed Augustana in their first home game. Rhodes has played a cupcake schedule so far, but their next game against Huntingdon will give us some perspective. They have looked impressive thus far however.

Centre is trying to get back on course rattling off two consecutive wins vs some below average competition. Centre’s defense stifled Hanover, with Hanover only putting 8 shots on cage. Sam Long had 5 saves. They play an SAA level opponent next in their game vs Goucher.

Sewanee couldn’t pull any magic vs Roanoke. Roanoke is a tough team, but also based on other scores, this Sewanee team does not look like the one we are used to. They are young on both offense and defense for the first time in a while. This should bode well for them in future years, but based off of OOC games so far, Sewanee looks to be struggling. Of course come conference time they will be one hell of a matchup. Never count the Tigers out of winning the conference title.

Sewanee received a beat-down from Roanoke yesterday. I watched this one online. To Roanoke's credit, their announcers are the best I've heard so far. I tried to enjoy their banter during the bloodbath.

It is sometimes hard to take lessons on either side from a game like that. What is clear is that Roanoke has a very good defense. Sewanee had twice as many turnovers as Roanoke, and equally telling, Sewanee was 42% on their clears, while Roanoke was 100%.

Sewanee clearly has a lot of work to do this season. The upside for Sewanee fans is that most of the players are either new or had limited playing time in prior seasons. The season will season them.

It is always interesting see compare two teams that have played a common opponent. In this case we get a feel for just how far apart Rhodes and Hendrix are currently. Rhodes beat Augustana 20 - 4, while Hendrix lost to them 6 - 10. Just stating facts, Hendrix has a "new" promoted from Asst. HC. Not sure that would have an effect on the team but Coaching changes usually have, at least at the start, a negative result on the team. With Hendrix "rebuilding ", Oglethorpe with a new HC, continuing to try to rebuild, and Centre spiraling downward, the Conference divide between the haves and have nots is getting wider.

Rhodes hosted Widener this afternoon and held on for the 8-7 Win. Rhodes defense held Widener to 30 shots and was 24 of 29 in clearing attempts. Link had 8 saves and none bigger than the one with less than a minute to play. The offensive unit was very balanced netting 8 goals on 3 assists: two goals from Matt Perez and one goal each for Powers, Mueller, Marasco, David Perez and Tyler Milwit. Considering Widener beat Swarthmore this year 12-6 and was respectable in a 6-18 loss against Salisbury this is a nice W for the SAA. Rhodes will host Muhlenberg College on Thu.

Considering Rhodes lost 12-6 to Swarthmore last year that’s a great win. Arguably their best win in program history so far?

Centre played a fairly solid game against a solid Goucher team, losing 9-10 (they got out shot 21-44 though). It’s starting to look like Centre is starting to find its footing with two freshman, DiMichele and Malubay, stepping up for their offense. Sam Long is gonna have to stand on his head for Centre to win a game versus an SAA opponent not named Oglethorpe however.

I see some wins coming the SAA way over the last few days with wins coming from BSC, Berry, and Oglethorpe ! Rhodes fell to Mulenburg, and Hendrix plays tonight. The gap between the top and bottom of the Conference is pretty much set for now, but Conference play may shake things up.

Some more context for Sewanee’s struggles this year. From what I have heard, Peter Brown, who was easily Sewanee’s best player on offense last year, got a terrible staff infection in one of his hips and had to have hip replacement surgery or something of that likeness and is unable to play his senior year. I have also heard Pat Dimento, who started at left wing for Sewanee’s attack last year was dismissed from the team for breaking team policy. This is what I have heard through the grapevine, so it may not be 100% accurate but it would make sense with Sewanee’s offensive personnel.

Hayden Hunt, from the game or two I have watched of Sewanee, has been playing midfield to fill Brown’s role, while Freshmen Daniel Burnhum and Jake Vaughn have been left to plug in the holes at attack.

Always hate to hear a player lose his Sr. year. That's a tough way to finish college as a player.
