The schedule is out. http://www.gomustangsports.com/sports/mlax/2017-18/schedule

Another brutal OOC schedule. RIT is dropped for Denison to start the season.

Never one to dodge a challenge. They get thru 1st 3-4 and this could be a great season for SU! The Denison tilt has the makings of a NCAA Semi Final game in the st week of season.

Megan Puls Classic 2017 this Sunday should shed a little light on the progress the Mustangs may show this year:

The 2017 schedule:

Stevenson's OOC schedule is probably the strongest in the nation, IMO, but they still need to win those games to have better seeding for the NCAA tourney. Since winning the National championship their OOC record has been as follows:
2014: 7-2
2015: 5-4
2016: 4-4
2017: 3-5
While I rather see them play the best teams in the nation, the loses have been hurting their NCAA seeding and is probably one of the reason they have not advanced past the round of 16 since 2014.

14 graduates is a lot of leadership lost.,
Lose 6 of last years top 10 scorers (2-3-5-8-9-10). Korvin and Donifreo (spelling?) most notably
Lost goalie and a starting pole but should be Strong defensively.
Will be interesting to see their start against what does look like one of the toughest OOC.
Read on Maryland thread you got a soph. Transferring in.

They have also had a few close calls with some of their conference opponents in the last few years. What happens if they have a rough time with with their OOC and then don't get the AQ? Does 3-5 against a great OOC schedule get them a Pool C?

Tough to answer without the rest of the info. I'd venture, YES but it also depends which 3 they beat, and where those teams eventually stack up.

Can somebody please explain what has happened to this proud program?

I enjoyed many games in the old stadium and the new. Prior to the NC the program was on fire. Great tailgates; fan enthusiasm; best of kind rivalry with Salisbury; coaching staff D 1 level; plenty of AA quality players; one night game we had a full house which is rare for D 3; fogos like Ray Witte were best of breed with plenty of swagger; foreign players with attitude; great still pictures posted; streaming video better than most D 1 programs; game of the year all divisions in Johnny Unitas Stadium against Tufts at their peak; plenty of posts on LP; etc.

Was it a tuition increase; coach put on weight and got lethargic; change of conference; tougher admission rqts; de emphasis by administration; a scandal which has yet to be publicized; regression to the mean; ???

This is true, Tufts was coming off its first Title many viewed as a fluke. Stevenson featured 11 All-Americans including 5 First Teamers I think. The game was moved and then delayed due to t-storms, #1 v. #2. I believe at the time it was the most viewed Live Action Game Report ever on LaxPower. Enough people were "watching" to draw a Nielsen rating.

Lax Magazine voted it the best game of 2011, all divisions and pro-level. Most hyped D3 game I can ever recall.

Tufts won 14-13:

Scheduled for Stevenson in afternoon but field too soggy so moved to Johnny U Stadium. Lightning delays until 9pm start. Frozen sleet falling most of the game. Fans with umbrellas. Two best fogos in D 3, maybe all divisions, Ray Witte against Nick Rhoads. Too many shots to count. Fantastic game.

In the D 3 NC game that year Salisbury blew Tufts off the field; 19 - 7 if I remember. Sam Bradman and Matt Canone had come of age behind a typical Salisbury defense.

MrLax2U, I'll start by saying I have no details or inside info on the Stevenson program as far as admissions, team attitude, etc. This is just my quick two cents from an outsiders perspective.

I think the lore of Stevenson has passed a little in recent years. They still have talent, but just not as much as the teams from 2009-2013. Not sure they are attracting the same quantity of talented players they used to. They were the new hot thing in those years and I think that hype has settled down. Since they don't have the same amount of talent, they aren't going to produce the same results as they used to with the style they play. They just aren't putting out 8 or 9 all americans anymore.

Good analysis, Barry; thanks.

Do you think if their lax program had stayed in CAC, they would have been better off? That would almost guarantee they'd face the Gulls 3x/year which seemed to help them or at least helped keep an edge on them on their way up. Those games always generated a lot of excitement and testosterone in the bleachers.

You Tube has a video with an Al Pacino voiceover on one of those games. It shows an incident involving Andrew Sellers after which Berkman walked over to the Stang bench to shake hands with their coach to tone things down. It's a game, guys; not a war.

I posted this on last years forum. My perspective on why the team is not the same as 8 years ago. Let me start by saying, I don't understand why a kid goes to a team with up to 70 players and thinks he is going see the field. On the 2016 roster I saw 72 players and 2017 it was 60. 6 goalies on the Roster in 2016....and $50k/yr to boot. Crazy what a national championship will do for your recruiting.

However, what we are seeing now is the result of a game being flooded with talent unlike the mid 2000's and there are plenty of other options for a great lacrosse experience within 150miles, with great coachs and winning teams.

Honestly, I think other division 3 programs realized they needed to invest into better facilities, equipment, and marketing. A number of the CAC schools have all invested heavily into sports (UMW, CNU,York, SMCM and even MMU all have new fields since I graduated).

I also think that division 3 as a whole is much more talented. At my alma mater, I know for a fact they have kids on the bench who would have been leading scorers on our team a decade ago. It's very impressive to see how far division 3 lacrosse has come especially at the non-power house schools.

You raise an interesting point, Spieler; but what about the D 3 power house schools. Take the south region for example; where would you slide 2017 Stevenson, Salisbury and Denison into the D 1 lax ranks?

I think the point is high school lacrosse growth is outpacing D1 lacrosse growth exponentially. The spots on a D1 teams are so limited that D1 caliber players naturally get passed on and find themselves at a D3 school. I think what this has created is a larger top tier in D3 programs that are investing the time and money into their program. A few years ago there may have only been 5 consistently great D3 teams, now looking into 2018 there is 15-20 that are constantly being looked at.

Could some D3 teams beat a few D1 teams? sure. I think we are seeing that with more D3 teams having fall play days with D1 teams. (Also D1 teams having to scrimmage MLL and USA teams). It is pretty awesome watching the growth of lacrosse impact all levels of the game.

Im really not trying to be a downer but it's not hard for me to imagine Stevenson going 0-7 with that opening OOC schedule. Personally I feel Stevenson has taken some steps back and while the rest of the teams on their schedule are moving forward in 2018. With the lack of coverage in the D3 off season, this opinion could change pretty quickly.

I'm with you, blanked. Cantabene and his staff are astute students of lacrosse and they certainly know their team. What could they be thinking or what do they know that we don't to front load a schedule like that? As long as they win their conference they get to the playoffs; but they will be stretched to their limit with no let up at the outset. And no respite for injury recovery.
