2018 D3 Bracketology, Selection Sunday

2018 D3 Bracketology, Selection Sunday

New postby D-III on Sun May 06, 2018 5:19 pm

My Selection Sunday bracket, trying to get this out as soon as possible so there may be typos etc....Keep in mind the individual match-ups are a crap shoot. It just takes the Committee seeing it differently in one match-up to alter an entire bracket. Nonetheless, I would argue this bracket makes the most sense from a seeding/balance perspective, while at the same time accounting for the NCAA's intense focus on geography and $$.

I can answer any questions here or on Twitter, rest of the evening.

Selection Sunday Bracket:

North:

winner of #1 RIT (Liberty AQ) v. winner of #16 Albion (MIAA AQ) v. #17 John Carroll (OAC AQ) (game played at RIT) v. winner of #8 Cortland (SUNYAC AQ) v. #9 Springfield (NEWMAC AQ)

v.

winner of #4 Amherst (Pool C) v. #13 Rhodes (Southern AQ)* v. winner of #5 Ithaca (Pool C) v. #12 Merchant Marine (Skyline AQ)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

winner of #3 Wesleyan (Pool C) v. #14 Huntingdon (USA South AQ)* v. winner of #6 Stevens (E8 AQ) v. #11 Colorado College (Pool B)*

v.

winner of #2 Tufts (NESCAC AQ) v. winner of #15 Keene St. (Little East AQ) v. #18 Johnson & Wales (GNAC AQ) (game played at Tufts) v. winner of #7 Cabrini (CSAC AQ) v. #10 Stevenson (MAC Commonwealth AQ)
______________________________________________________________________________________________

South

winner of #1 Gettysburg (Pool C) v. winner of #16 Elizabethtown (Landmark AQ) v. #17 New England College (NAC AQ)(game played at Gettysburg) v. winner of #8 Roanoke (Pool C) v. #9 Christopher Newport (Pool C)

v.

winner of #4 Denison (NCAC AQ) v. #13 Illinois Wesleyan (Pool B) v. winner of #5 OWU (Pool C) v. #12 Aurora (Midwest AQ)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

winner of #3 Dickinson (Centennial AQ) v. #14 Western New England (CCC AQ) winner of #6 York (Pool C) v. #11 Lynchburg (ODAC AQ)
v.

winner of #2 Salisbury (CAC AQ) v. winner of #15 Eastern (MAC Freedom AQ)* v. #18 Morrisville (NEAC AQ)* (game played at Salisbury) vs. winner of #7 W&L (Pool C) v. #10 Transylvania (Ohio River AQ)

*Colorado College, Huntingdon and Rhodes all have to fly. I shifted Rhodes/Huntingdon up, as flying for a Tuesday game seemed unrealistic. Transylvania was seeded way up to prevent a flight. Cabrini was shifted North to balance the bracket and Stevenson made sense as an opponent both geographically and by seed.

If York drops to 6 from a 2 seed after a 3 goal loss to the defending national champions, the selection process is seriously flawed. On top of that they only lost to Gettysburgh by 2 so I call BS. Your bracket would have them playing Lynchburg, Dickenson then Salisbury. Give me a break!!! They derserve one gravey game and should be at least the 3 seed after the season they had.

They could be #2 or #3 which would be the safer prediction I guess. My analysis shows they are frankly overrated and when the Committee digs, they’ll fall a bit. That said, keep in mind they drop to #6 based on the geography of the midwestern schools. I could see a scenario where Denison/OWU are #3/#6 instead. Which puts Dickinson/York at the #4/#5 line.

Like clockwork, right up there with the Freshmen looking good and the questions of how to read the bracket.

Truer words were never spoken......re: ^^^^^.

Those of us who have watched DIII do his bracketology for what seems like a couple of decades, or more, have seen that his predictions of how the committee will sort through things is pretty amazingly spot on.

And, we always have some folks who just have to shout out that "You're wrong!!!!"

As LFN notes, like clockwork.

Thanks for the effort, DIII! Much appreciated.

Yea, we have known D-III for quite some time on laxpower. He's always fair and generally (hope you are correct) accurate. I know I always appreciate his efforts. Great job as usual D-III.

It's a shame F&M couldn't sneak in to Pool C--they were a team that had enough firepower it would have been a lot of fun to see if they could make a run.

York..........OUCH!! Never did I ever think a CAC Title game would mean so much. Oh well - good for the game and good to see regions aligning a little more true.

Apparently, the CAC title game means a lot more than the Centennial Conference title game... Oh well. Both York and Cabrini (and Stevenson) get placed into the Northern brackets... meaning that a Salisbury-York NCAA final is possible, although beating RIT will be a tall task for any team.

Congrats to D-III who correctly picked ALL of the at-large bids for the tournament. He should have a spot on the committee.

Spot on, the man does his homework and is money in the bank. We may want things to be different sometimes, but he is the man.

N.b. it would e interesting to hear from him his perspective on the selection process and how it might be improved. After listening to the selection show last night seems there could be some changes made. Seems to me Carc and company feels early wins should be valued less than later ones. Always thought upsets are easier early than late. Consider the season as a progression. I.e. Salisbury and Norte Dame, Villanova.
