Coaching Carousel 2018

Presbyterian College coach told me years ago (about 4 coaches ago) that they'd never get rid of women's lax because they have football, and they needed all their women's sports to comply with title IX. Well, they just dropped down in football to the Pioneer League (2021) where they don't give football scholarships anymore. They are still a D1 school so they can't just play D2 for women's lax, they'd have to drop to club. Of course they could remain D1 for women's lax and just not fund or fully fund the scholarships.

The size of the school (tiny)and the location would work well for D2, but that can't be done unless the entire school changes and I think they are happy with the conference for other sports.

Grand Valley is off the clock, I think this is a good pick. Smart young lady, very good coach, strong connections to the area. Wish her all the best.

Why does the entire school have to switch to D2? There are plenty of schools that have teams in more than one division. Johns Hopkins is D1 in lacrosse but D3 in cross country, track, soccer, baseball . . . I'm pretty sure D3 Franklin and Marshall is D1 in wrestling.

So if a school with a D1 program for women’s lacrosse is not fully funded are there any worries a player may have to consider?

Didn't see this one coming! Curious to see what the next move is for both the exiting staff and the university. I wonder how difficult it is to recruit to this school...

A D3 school can 'play up' in one men's sport and one women's sport. Same rule doesn't apply to 'playing down' so D1 schools can't just drop down in lax or swimming or football. St. Mary's (CA) probably would have dropped to D3 for women's lax but the only choice was D1 or club. There are some sports that don't have NCAA D2 championships, so those sports can be 'played up' - beach volleyball, water polo, men's volleyball - so a D2 school may have more than one sport being played up, but only some sports are allowed to do that. A D2 school can't play up in lax or down in lax. Hockey is all over the place and there are too many exceptions to list.

Whether they can offer scholarships is another consideration. Just because they play up to D1 doesn't mean they can automatically offer scholarships. There were a few (I think 4) schools offering scholarships in men's hockey (Union, Colorado College) when the division system was instituted in the 70's, and they got to continue playing D1 and offering scholarships. Colorado College now offers scholarship to women's soccer to offset the hockey scholarships for Title IX compliance. Hopkins offers scholarships in lax for both, but they can't just bump other sports to D1 and offer scholarships.

for PC I heard they are looking at going D2 for all sports, I don't think they would do it just for lacrosse but they are so small and have a hard time competing. I don't think they would do it just for lacrosse. as for concerns of a program not being fully funded, what kind of support is there, cost is also a concern.

That weird that so many coaches left.
Doubt pay is a problem for them unless they are squeezing the other programs to fund the football team
Too much Nike $$
Did they get a new AD wanting to put a new stamp on the place? :confusion-shrug:

Best of luck to Coach Dowd!

Best of luck...? Let's not forget the kids who moved across the country, because they drank "the Kool-aid". I suppose it's just business; maybe the most valuable lesson they'll learn in college is not to trust anyone. No dog in the fight here, just thought someone should point out the other side.
