running out the clock

New postby lowandaway on Sat May 16, 2009 6:19 pm

At the end of today's Princeton Cornell game, Cornell was running out the clock and there were 3 flags down at this time. Seems to me that intentionally turning the ball over inside the box would have been to Cornell's advantage (or shooting on the goal for that matter) because Princeton couldn't advance the ball, Cornell would retain possession after the penalties were sorted out and would be able to use the area outside of the box for 10 seconds.

Its not possible, after 3 flags they are running out of clock. I think Cornell not consider the flag. That's why Cornell is out of clock.

As long as the flags are down, Princeton cannot possibly score, since the whistle is blown the second they get possession. Once Cornell shoots (or intentionally loses the ball), Cornell may be man up, but it is at least theoretically possible for Princeton to get the ball and score. So even with flags down, Cornell was right to continue to stall at the end of the game.
