2018 KRACH Ratings

New postby redfrommi on Sun Mar 25, 2018 3:08 pm

As has been my practice, I will be publishing KRACH ratings (Ken's Ratings of American College Hockey), which are based on a statistical approach known as the Bradley-Terry model. I like to think of it as a one number rating of what a team "deserves" based on their season, and the relative strengths of their opponents (rewarding tougher schedules over weaker ones, for example).

A deep technical explanation would be hard to follow, but the basic premise is that there exists a set of rating numbers for each team R_X such that for teams A and B the R_A/(R_A+R_B) ratio predicts the likelihood of team A beating team B, based solely on the current season performance so far. This approach is "retrodictive" and therefore is designed to perfectly predict the past (already played) season, rather than the future, but does have some future prediction value as it does a great job of providing the relative strength of teams who might not have played each other.

I will try to produce a weekly update designed to coincide with the data used for the national polls, and used by the regional committees for the NCAA as they begin to produce regional rankings in mid April. (The numbers here are NOT used in the NCAA process, which do not also use national polls...)

Also posted, and maybe easier to understand, is RRWP (Round Robin Winning Percentage) which predicts the resulting record of a team playing all the other opponents in DII.

I find your stats and KRACH ratings very informative. Thanks for doing this Red!

thanks for the info.

This does not bode well for Limestone at this point. If I recall correctly KRACH had the correct 4 teams in south as NCAA, just different order,

can you explain what factors would put Belmont abbey would be ahead of Limestone? Belmont Abbey lost to LR and Tampa just like Limestone and also lost to Lynn which Limestone beat handily. I can see where some of the wins might be better than Limestones but overall their victories have similar win/loss records.

I am not that good that I can definitively explain it, but it probably has more to do with the other games on their resume. Limestone has played Chowan, Emmanuel, and Lees-McRae, which are toward the bottom of Conf. Carolinas standings, and the Abbey has yet to face the latter two. That might pull down Stone's ratings for the moment as their strength of schedule might be lowered by those games.

But it doesn't really matter - Stone, BAC, and UMO all have to play each other at least once, and for some combination of them, twice (conference tourney). That will shake things out just fine for any team which might dominate those matchups.

It seems to _most_ always work that way in the NE10 where you have a big 3. Someone plays themself out of the tourney...

Red - It would seem by the numerical values that those top 4 teams in the south and the top 3 are pretty safe (Adelphi in the north would need pretty significant help as well), or am I reading too much into those numbers?

Since there are still conference championships to go through, not as much would be safe. In the South, LR is probably there if they don't start dropping multiple games, but Mesa with a bad loss could well be out given their likely ending SOS numbers. Saint Leo still has Tampa and FIT in regular season, plus meeting someone like that again in the Sunshine State conference tourney, so could easily pile up 2-3 more losses (or not).

But I will say that in general, if the one or two loss teams can keep it that way for the rest of the season, including conference tourneys, they will be in pretty good standing for the NCAAs.

For Adelphi, their path is to beat both Mack and Le Moyne in the NE10 tourney (and lose no more). However if Lake Erie can win out, it becomes tough to include them...

NYIT really is at the point of needing help...lots of it.

KRACH short update before the weekend games - I recalculated including Tampa's loss to Saint Leo - not a lot of change there except to bring up Florida Tech.

Regional rankings according to KRACH at this time(rank in parentheses):

North
In: Le Moyne(1), Merrimack(2), Seton Hill(4), Lake Erie(7)
Bubble: Adelphi(9), NYIT(10), LIU Post(12), Mercy(14), Mercyhurst(15), Saint Anselm(16)

South{/b]
In: [b]Lenoir-Rhyne(3), Saint Leo(5), Colorado Mesa(6), Tampa(8)

Bubble: Rockhurst(11), Belmont Abbey(13), Florida Tech(17), Mount Olive(18), Limestone(19), Lincoln Memorial(20)

The actual regional rankings first output on Wednesday had Tech then Adelphi and Mercy in the top six, devaluing Lake Erie and LIU Post compared to KRACH in the North. In the South SOS took Rockhurst, FIT and UMO further down than I have them.

Big games coming up this weekend (all on Saturday):

Saint Leo (KRACH 5) at Florida Tech (17) noon
Tampa (8) at Lynn (28) 7 pm
Lake Erie (7) at Mercy (14) 1 pm
Adelphi (9) at Merrimack (2) 1 pm
LIU Post (12) at NYIT (10) 4 pm
UIndy (25) at Rockhurst (11) noon
Limestone (19) at Seton Hill (4) noon

Biggest game is most likely Adelphi at Mack. Adelphi probably needs this one...

Games included are for NCAA Division II contests only, and exclude any games with Brevard and Pfeiffer (currently transitioning to DIII, and playing primarily DIII schedules at this point).
