CA is definitely a team with great potential this year. I see from the recruits section that Ulrich committed to LeMoyne and McCartney to Bowdoin. I bet Ryan Wimpee, Russ Wilson and Sam Stein all have the opportunity to play in college as well. They are going to be tough.

Denver Elite

New postby southsider77 on Sun Oct 25, 2009 9:59 am

Sounds like there may be some late additions/replacements to Denver Elite after the last session today. Some players likely have football/soccer/academic conflicts and will open spaces for other good players who got squeezed out by the numbers game.

Ottenbreit and Heller

New postby 1moreUVAfan on Wed Oct 28, 2009 10:22 am

I'd love to know more about Virginia's Colorado recruits, Tanner Ottenbreit and Rhody Heller from
Regis Jesuit. Defense and goal are very important positions for UVA in this class. Obviously we know much less about them compared to east coast guys. Can anyone give us some opinions/information? Strengths and weaknesses, for example, would be good to know about. Thanks a lot.

ps. I'm sure they will enjoy college life at UVA.

Have heard that the Kent kids that play football have backed out. That would include Alex Sadler, Bailey Tils and Collins Ganz. Matt Florence is out as well but that was before selections. Waiting to see who they are replaced with. Also hoping that Rhody Heller continues with team after UVA committment.

UVA Fan -- both of these kids are great players, obviously, and must have showed well at some East Coast showcases. Hard for anyone out here, though, to say much about how they might stack up nationally. These commitments do say something, though, about how far the game has come along out here in Colorado.

Regis is a very strong program out here, but historically it has not been the absolute top program in Colorado (it hasn't won a state championship, for example). And despite their college commitments, these kids have not been dominant high school players yet (although they will likely be huge this season).

Heller saw limited game time at Regis as a back-up goalie soph year. Ottenbreit did play a lot as a soph, but I don't think he made the 1st or 2nd all-state team. Which means these two are not the only strong players out here.

The interesting thing about Ottenbreit and Heller committing to UVA is that they both (I'm assuming) turned down offers from Tierney. Now either Tierney doesn't feel as strong about those two as Starsia does or the allure to go out of state is still a huge drawing card.

There is a public relations campaign that goes on at an early age (9th grade) for the top players in Colorado. Obviously, parents are a huge factor, but a player's high school coach and club coach (in this case Munro and Matt Brown) are key factors in promoting these players to top programs. If you are lucky enough to get selected to Jake Reeds rising sophomore camp (which Heller & Ottenbriet did), you basically become one of the "blue-chip" recruits in the country.

In addition, if you play well with the top Colorado All Star team (Mile Hi historically) at the team camps, that moves you to the top of the list. After that, you have to get on an airplane and visit those top schools and show your interest. It's not cheap, nor are you going to get a huge scholarship, but if you get a school ready to commit and you as the player is ready to commit, you don't have much time.

So in the case of Ottenbriet and Heller, it's an incredible opportunity to play at and attend a great school. On the flip side, I selfishly would love to see them don the crimson and gold for the Pioneers.

Congrats to Heller and Ottenbreit! It is a great opportunity for these talented boys. You just cannot compare DU to UVA, yet anyway. The real question for these boys is playing time at the college level. They could see some good time early on at DU, whereas at UVA it will likely be quite awhile before they see the field. Nonetheless, if they are patient, it will be worth the wait!

Its great to see two kids going to a school like UVA, and having a Goalie and a D of that caliber has to give Regis a huge advantage over any other teams Defense next year. Does Regis offense to go with what should be in the running for the best D in the state?

The combination of Ottenbreit and Heller has to be one of the best in Colorado history, any schools have anything close to compete against that this year, or in the past have we ever had a goalie and a Defenseman from the same team go to D1 schools like UVA?

You never really know what you have until you have all your players out there playing real games. But the leading indicators for the Regis class of 2011 (especially on defense) continue to be very strong.

Undefeated as freshmen, lost one game as sophs/JV. Lots of spots on the Mile Hi/DU Elite rosters. Currently undefeated in the DLC fall league. Now two top tier D1 recruits.

You would think that Regis should be making a championship run in 2010 or 2011.

Fall ball is only a proxy for the regular season as many players are committed to other sports and some schools are not represented...but with that, this weekends final game includes two teams that should be hanging around late into the playoffs next Spring. 8PM Saturday at Barton. Creek vs. Regis. Should be fun.

what happened this past weekend in the DLC games? Did they get snowed out or were they played?

The DLC games scheduled at DU were played on schedule. First couple of games were played on a field with spots of snow but went off without a hitch. In the first game, Regis played Arapahoe. It was a good game with the final score being closer than the game. Regis pulled their goalie Rhody Heller for another and Arapahoe scored 4 goals in the last 10 minutes of the game. In the second game it was Creek vs Chapparel. Creek dominated from the beginning with a final win by about 10 goals.

Ryan LaPlante (definite D1 recruit 2011) and Brett Newman (Ohio State 2010) from FOCO definitely rank right up there with Regis' D.

Congratulations to Fort Collins Unified junior goalie Ryan LaPlante who earlier this week verbally committed to the University of Denver. Ryan chose DU over a large number of schools that have been recruiting him since the beginning of September. Way to go Ryan!

3 to 1 might be a sign of more to come...2010/Year of the D. With many of the top programs returning strong defenses and goal tending while losing many of their top scorers.

So how does everyone see the 2010 season shaping up? Colorado has some high profile D1 recruits that should be interesting to watch along with a whole host of talented players that are just starting to make a name for themselves. I don't see any clear favorites and I think this could be the year we see one of the non traditional powers (CA?) crack the final four.
Thoughts?
