South Carolina girls lacrosse

New postby dragonboat on Sat Mar 25, 2017 2:04 pm

My husband and I moved to Goose Creek, South Carolina..... my information may be wrong, but it is my understanding that Hanahan high school did not field a girls team as they had no coach.... my husband grew up outside of Baltimore, played lacrosse.... Baltimore is a lacrosse hotbed.... he coached all 3 of our children, who all received substantial lacrosse and academic scholarships.....we want to help grow lacrosse here, if there are any schools, parents, or anyone who just wants to learn, we will help! Lacrosse has been a great sport for our family, we want to give back. He will be applying as the girls coach at Hanahan.....he is very good at what he does.....hoping to meet fellow lacrosse fans down south!

Girls lacrosse in SC still young and not up to par with NC and GA, but it is growing fast. In Charleston area Wando and Bishop England are the cream of the area. If Hanahan does not have a program I guess you could go to the AD and try to get one started - offer to coach. There are a number of club teams in Charleston area as well, so I would think one would be willing to have help from someone from lacrosse central (Baltimore).

I'm in Columbia and lacrosse here lags Charleston, Greenville, and Fort Mill/Charlotte areas, but it is growing. With Lexington and River Bluff adding girls lacrosse I expect it to take off as Chapin already fields a good team.

One of the biggest things holding back girls lacrosse in SC is a lack of quality coaches, so I would think you'd be able to find a place to jump in and help. I don't personally know Charleston people to contact, but I imagine if you talk to the AD that'd be a good starting point.

Good luck.

Get in touch with Meg Taylor with Low Country Fins. Meghan's the girls director and she also coaches their younger team. The Fins play out of Mt. Pleasant but have girls from all around the area. Meghan knows the game from a player's perspective (All-American out of U of Delaware) and also as a coach and director. Fins have been around now for a few years and they are growing and improving each season. It's a fun club to be around and they are only getting better.

Speaking of SC girls lacrosse, Chapin follows up losses to Fort Mill & Bishop England with big wins over Nations Ford & JL Mann. Mann already beat BE but lost to Wando. BE just beat Wando. Dorman playing well, losing to Mann by 1. St. James is killing everyone they play but their schedule has been quite weak.

SC girls lacrosse season is interesting this year, especially among top 10.

Agree, like the maxprep brackets.

No 2nd round upsets (AAAA) either, though Bluffton came close.

I hope splitting into 2 divisions lures more girls teams next year.

In my opinion, money and quality/dedicated coaches are to two shortfalls.

Plus, you'll need more affordable offseason playing options.

Agree, especially part about coaches. No one in SC grew up playing lacrosse so schools are reliant on grabbing a teacher or local parent from NE or Mid-Atlantic to coach.

At least with 2 divisions there are more opportunities to make playoffs and move up ranks, so maybe that will offer some incentive. Lexington 1 finally getting on board should grow the girls game in the Midlands as that is an affluent school district with a large population.

Good article on Bryson - Grand Strand girls lacrosse doesn't get much coverage in rest of state. Hopefully those Myrtle Beach teams will continue to improve and start giving Wando & BE some competition. Would like to see them beef up their schedules, maybe play some Fort Mill and Columbia teams.

Play off brackets went up on Friday morning. There must have been some drama because the 5A bracket changed twice over the weekend.

Here is the current 5A bracket:

Here is everyone else:

The MaxPrep bracket has not gone up yet.

Also, congratulations to 22 ladies selected on Sunday for the South Carolina Team that will travel up to Stony Brook for the National Tournament.

Will be surprised if 4A final is not BE-Chapin again. 5A semis a little more open. Spartanburg-FM is an interesting matchup.

Looks like FM had no trouble with SHS.

I've seen both JL Mann and Wando play this year. Wando is very impressive. Not sure how Wando lost to JL Mann earlier in the season. I plan to attend tonight game.

Mann beat FM for 5A title 7-5. FM was up but blew the lead.

BE beat Chapin 10-5. Lot of ticky-tack whistles this game, really hurt the flow of the game at times. 1 ref basically took over the game, blowing her whistle more times than the other 3 combined & calling fouls all over the field. The ref should never be the star of the game, but that was the case in this game. It made for a tough game to watch spectator-wise. These were 2 skilled teams, the "show of force" by the ref was not needed.
