So, as far as I know, Region D, aka The Northern Region ("Winter is Coming") is the 66 corridor - Concorde, Liberty, Cedar Run (and Marshall). The Eastern District (renamed back to its old Cardinal name, just like the Western went back to its old Cedar Run name) is part of Region C, aka The Occoquan Region with Patriot, Gunston, and Cardinal.

I have no idea about C, but I understand that D will follow the same logic it did last fall with field hockey, which depends on where Marshall finishes in their 5A District - and plays up to 6A starting at Regionals.

I think Marshall is going to finish first... If so, here is my guess in an ugly attempt at the format...

L3 @ C2 --------------------Winner @ CR1
---------------------------------------------------Semifinal @ higher seed
CR4 @ Marshall
------------------------------Winners @ Higher Seed
C3 @ L2

----------------------------------------------------------------Final

C4 @ CR3--------------------Winner @ L1
---------------------------------------------------Semifinal @ higher seed (L1, if both 1's)
L4 @ CR2--------------------Winner @ C1

Third-place game:
Semifinal 1 Loser vs Semifinal 2 Loser

Re: The Master of Redefining Last-Second...

New postby UnderArmourOdor on Sat May 12, 2018 5:50 am

A new record last night at the Prison Paddocks Stadium. The Rams did a masterful job of keeping Sullivan off the boards to be leading 11-6 and put on a mini-stall halfway thru the 2nd half. Horses came back with two before two YCs stalled their stampede. Rams wrapped two man-up goals around a SoCo man down tally for 13-9. Then it got bad for the home team as three more YCs followed in the last four minutes (getting them to six) and two men down and that was it run out a good win get on the bus. Not so fast Shecky...FPS for a 1st Team District Captain with 3 SECONDS left [their previous record] and they go to goal scoring inside a second for the record of all-time [Moderator: Don't us the L word UAO]...OK to coin a English Premier League commentator let's say it was at the death! Not saying there will be retribution from the green & white but there has been for a lot less for such classy play payback! Ah the 14-9 win so much better...

Finally getting around the the first round of districts - two upsets already with McLean leading the way by repeating the upset in districts. Have not heard much about that game...how did they pull it off (according to the computer second biggest upset of Northern region).

Looking to the finals - Langley and Woodson look to be locks and easy wins with the more competitive game being Madison vs. Centreville. Realize McLean played Langley close in regular season but do not see them being able to keep it close in the rematch.

Re: Number 19 in the Book...

New postby UnderArmourOdor on Thu May 17, 2018 12:26 am

It was a throwback District Championship like back to 1995 where the Rams and Cavs first tangled for a Concorde Crown and 24 years later it is still as intense this time for a Patriot. The parents don't like each other, the coaches aren't fond of each other, the players feed off of both vibes...luckily we have a level-headed reporter of the rivalry [Moderator: Just had a DefCon 4 Snarky Alarm go off in Forum Control and now I see why!] Hey just because it looked like the sky was going to spit out flying monkeys above "The Pat" and that there were no team intros...afraid each side would Boo the other side??? It didn't look good for the visitors already missing a Captain Glaser for the second game (injury?) and then Prosser came over to the trainer with a bulky right shoulder.
The game opened with a WTW goal by the All-American Gates but had a Robo answer from Middie Book. Halfway thru the first half it was 5-3 Cavs. Two Cav Frosh tallied and at 7-3 Cav SR Capt Defender took a YC. Two shots, a save a clear and Cavs killed the time and then scored twice to end the half 9-3.
Every single 1st Team All-District player was on hand at halftime 7 Cavs & 4 Cavs were easy but 5 SoCo players, 2 Spartans and a Bruin all showed for a first time in my experience!
Second half a goal apiece to make it 10-4. The Cavs then rattled off 11 in a row before the Rams finished the scoring and the game ended 21-5. Good looking banner...makes it 4 Concordes, 7 Liberty & now an eighth Patriot title. The rain held off, no injuries, Prosser played well despite the shoulder, District POY Dougherty had the hot hand with Stephan shut off, Rams Davis had three and the Cavs Fab Frosh Duo of Brown (5 Gs) & Alsup (4 Gs) enjoyed the big stage. Great crowd on both sides, snack bar working overtime and it is probably a safe bet the 25th year will not see any drop in this rivalry.

Region D CORRECTED

New postby ursine_canine on Thu May 17, 2018 12:32 pm

Since my bracketology turned out to be so spectacularly bad...

Here is the corrected Region D tournament:

1st Rd - 5/18 2nd Rd - 5/21 Semis - 5/23

Oakton @ Patriot ------------> Winner at Langley
---------------------------------------------------------------------------->Winners at Higher Seed
Osbourn @ Centreville
----------------------------------> Winners at Higher Seed
Herndon @ Marshall

OP @ Yorktown ---------------> Winner at Madison
---------------------------------------------------------------------------->Winners at Higher Seed
Westfield @ McLean ---------> Winner at Battlefield

Final on 5/29.

Still pretty sure the top 3 advance, so there would be a third place game among the semifinal losers - but I don't see it on the brackets.

Hylton and Forest Park are both grass fields. Both are very close to Colgan, so I'd bet that one or more of them moves there, since Colgan has a bye.

I know there is another turf field that occasionally gets used at John Paul the Great in Dumfries.

We joke that it is nice that PWC put money into bath room facilities before turf fields, but nights like these make us think FFX made the right call!

NOVA 2018 Elite 8?

New postby ursine_canine on Fri May 18, 2018 11:57 am

Now that the brackets are posted, anyone care to guess who the NOVA Elite 8 will be (semi-finals in each Region)?

I suppose I should offer my guesses, mostly based on records and head-to-heads:

Region C:
Woodson
Forest Park (losing the District actually puts them on a great path against two teams they have already beaten)
West Po
Robo (tough luck for a really good Colgan team)

Region D:
Langley
Centreville
Madison
Battlefield

Thoughts?

Only differences...
Robo vs. Colgan Would view a Robo win as an upset - Colgan has done pretty well vs. the three northern teams and would expect them to end Robo's season
Battlefield vs. McLean While I generally think Battlefield will win, this is really a toss up and depends on which McLean team shows up.

Looking at the brackets I do not think I have ever seen an easier path to crown in regionals. Woodson should win every game (including the finals) by at least 10.

Would expect to see a Langley/Madison final in Region D but comparably harder path for both.

Region D Results: Anyone see any of these games to give us a feel?
Battlefield 5 vs. McLean 14 Not a suprise but maybe by that big a margin?
Centreville 10 vs. Herndon 13 Got there too late moved to 6PM but YCs were the Cats undoing? Herndon dark horse???
James Madison 21 vs. Yorktown 8 Much bigger margin than I expected!
Langley 20 vs. Patriot 1 Thanks for coming, did the Snack Bar provide leftover items for their long drive home?
So Semis
Herndon @ Langley
McLean @ Madison

Tonight C Quarters (Home team listed first):
Colgan vs. Robinson
T.C. Williams vs. West Springfield
W.T. Woodson vs. South County
West Potomac vs. Hayfield

McLean's goalie is for real. Battlefield came out with seven legitimate scoring chances in the first five-six minutes, and she stopped six of them. Held them in the game long enough to get their offense going. That sort of goalkeeping can really change the feel of a game, so I while I wouldn't expect it, I also wouldn't be surprised to see them take anyone down the rest of the way.

Herndon surprised me, and I feel bad saying that, because I had pointed out earlier this season that they would surprise some teams. I am not going to bet against them, though Langley is a tough ticket.

I think D brings the best three teams to States, and the third place game next week might be an epic one...

Woodson and SC should be fun to watch, but I think the Colgan/Robo game should be interesting too. Up and coming hosting a reloading powerhouse...

Woodson 21 - SoCo 5: Salisbury scored first for the Stallions and Cavs answered with four. SoCo broke the run to make it 4-2. Then it got away in a hurry as the half ended 13-2. The Cavs started subbing in the bench in the second half with about 18 left.

TC Williams 12 - West Springfield 11: Good game on the postage stamp Minnie Howard field. TCW parents weren't real happy with final Yellow Card but Spartans couldn't get the equalizer. Win gets them a trip to "Tha Pat"

Robo 15 - Colgan 12: Great first half 7-6. Rams pulled away in 2nd.

West Po - Hayfield: West Po wins 19-8.

I don't have a name but #15 on Colgan is a slightly slower PR. Very Good hands and has size. Scored 3 in the first 5 minutes or so...She stood out even against the best defenders for Robo

Quick search shows a Mary Wash commit 2018-19. I think that is her.

Other athletes - #10 and #14 had some quicks and liked to top dodge. Sharks goalie had a good first half.

It was hard to see with the fogged up glasses from the torrential rain and then the fog we got...

Nice facility there.
