HS Girls Team of the Decade?

Postby JW21 on Tue Nov 03, 2009 10:50 am

With one season left to play in this decade (2001-2009), after a little research on some past seasons, here is a list of the 10 winningest programs in the country. I have a feeling this is not perfect so please post corrections where I have made mistakes. I used LaxPower archives and a couple of school web sites to find these results.

RANK TEAM STATE WINS LOSSES TIES PCT.
1 Moorestown NJ 207 9 0 0.958
2 St. Stephen's-St. Agnes VA 176 9 0 0.951
3 Westwood MA 196 9 3 0.950
4 West Genesse NY 185 12 0 0.939
5 Mount Hebron MD 173 11 1 0.938
6 Eden Prairie MN 126 8 4 0.928
7 Century MD 111 11 0 0.910
8 Radnor PA 184 20 1 0.900
9 Shawnee NJ 174 20 2 0.893
10 Garden City NY 161 19 1 0.892

It would appear that Moorestown, SSSA, and Westwood are in the hunt for #1 ...

I'd say Mt. Hebron and West Genny are in the hunt as well.

Just an addition, Northport has been 152-21-1 over this time without winning a state championship.

Eden Prairie, Minnesota??? One of the top ten high school teams of the decade??? In 2005, 16-0 Eden Prairie is ranked 662nd in the nation by Laxpower ( ... they moved up -- Phoenix-like -- to 121st this year) and you have Eden Prairie at number 6 ... relative?

What is the math behind the "PCT" numbers indicated above?

HINT: There is more to it than a simple win/loss percentage.

Westwood? Eden Prairie? :hand: Shouldn't the Team of the Decade have enjoyed a little national success? Agree SSA and Moorestown are there along with West Genesee and Hebron and others not mentioned in that list. Winning percentage means little if you don't play anyone.

Agreed SectIII. This whole thread is absurd if it doesn't take strength of schedule into account.

I was only ranking teams on win-loss records. I was not saying that one program was ahead of another in any other way. I thought that would be clear since they are listed in order by winning percentage, even though somehow I lost the nice formatting I had when I pasted those numbers in. I simply thought it was interesting to see those records from the past nine seasons. Judging the best team of the decade would surely be subjective, and I doubt anyone on this board would say that a team from Minnesota could accumulate those stats if they had to play teams from Baltimore, Philly, or Long Island on a regular basis.

"Forgeddabout" Baltimore, Philly, Long Island ... or upstate New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Florida, Virginia, New England, District of Columbia, etc., etc., etc. As far as I can tell, Eden Prairie has never played a team outside of Minnesota. It is entirely possible that Eden Prairie might not make it past Wisconsin. Iowa is rumored to have their number.

I would still like to know what the math is behind the "PCT" numbers you posted.

A NEW QUESTION: Did you actually look at the win/loss record of EVERY high school team in America? I know of at least one Maryland team that typically loses 1 game a year, Stephen Decatur. If the teams you posted are simply "listed in order by winning percentage," Stephen Decatur should have made the cut.

Yes, that is true ( ... Total Number of Games Won divided by Total Number of Games Played). I was hoping to get that information directly from the author just to make sure that they had not somehow added in power rating (etc.) and then had somehow managed to negate the addition.

As indicated in my post above, I am trying to figure out how a team like Stephen Decatur did not make the list. They would have ended up at about #5 if all that was done was to divide the Total Number of Games Won by the Total Number of Games Played.

How about Darien(CT) HS? I think they have been pretty dominant in their state in this decade, but I don't know their record.

Based on accomplishment, I'd have to go with Hebron as the team of the decade (which, BTW, is over; next year is the next decade). The only other team that possibly could be considered in the debate is Eden Praire.

Please do not forget Darien or Stephen Decatur.

I grant you I have deviated from the "winningest programs" test of the initial post and have injected a subjective opinion on which team I would consider to be the team of the decade (2000-2009). All of the other teams mentioned in this thread have had very fine records this decade, but one team -- Mt. Hebron -- in my view certainly was the best team of this decade. St. Stephen's St. Agnes would be a clear second (and even closer to no. one than no. three). I'd have to look at it more closely, but Moorestown might edge out West Genny for third since the Wildcats "down" years in the decade were more "downer" than Moorestown's.

How about Farmingdale in this conversation. They have been to state tourney for the past 4 years in a row. I would imagine their record is quite good as well.

Not quite as good as I first thought ... Farmingdale had 9 wins and 9 losses in 2000. :confusion-shrug:

NJBill, Absolutely correct with Mt. Hebron, SSSA, and Moorestown.

Darien is the best girl's team in Ct for this decade, based on winning the last 3 state championships. But prior to that run, Greenwich and Wilton were their equal, which makes it hard for Darien to claim top 5 in the country status. They aren't as dominant as say Moorestown or the other named schools.

Unfortunately, the idea here is to determine the best high school team of the WHOLE decade. There are many good teams and John Carroll is clearly one of the better teams. BUT, according to the Laxpower archives, John Carroll got off to a s-l-o-w start.
Record for 2000, 1win, 4 losses
2001, 3 wins, 6 losses, 1 tie
2002, 6 wins, 5 losses, 2 ties
2003, 1 win, 11 losses, 1 tie :confusion-shrug:

Maybe six IAAM Championships would make up for this, but I do not know that John Carroll achieved six IAAM Championships .

njbill remains "most correct" in my humble opinion.

Power rating was not used at all in the calculations. According to LaxPower, Stephen Decatur had a record of 74-20 from 2003-2009 which would be a winning percentage of 78.7%. LaxPower says they were 0-1 in 2002 and 0-0 in 2001, and I am sure those records are incomplete. However, for the Sea Hawks to make the top 10, they would have to have gone 99-0 in those two lost seasons to up their winning percentage to .892 and tie Garden City.
